State of Massachusetts mandates OpenDocument standard
The state of Massachusetts (officially Commonwealth of Massachusetts) have adopted the OASIS OpenDocument standard for productivity suites from 2007. One important criteria driving this decision was future-proofing such that documents produced today would still be accessible in 30 or 100 years time.
The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Systems (OASIS) is an international consortium setting e-business standards. The OASIS OpenDocument Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) V1.0 standard was accepted in April 2005 with the support of organisations such as Adobe, AMD, HP, IBM, Intel, & Sun Microsystems. Significant by their non-acceptance were fellow OASIS members Microsoft.
